Oil-to-telecoms conglomerate Reliance Industries drove gains, settling 1.5% higher at 2,425.60 rupees after scaling a record peak of 2,477.40 rupees earlier
The blue-chip NSE Nifty 50 index, which hit an all-time high during the session, closed 0.41% higher at 16,705.20, while the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex ended up 0.31% at 56,124.72 points
The blue-chip NSE Nifty 50 index and the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex hit record highs earlier in the day, but gave up some gains to end 0.13% higher at 16,280.10 and 0.28% up at 54,554.66, respectively

Apart from Tata Motors, investors are also waiting for quarterly earnings from three other big Nifty 50 companies later in the day - Axis Bank, Larsen and Toubro and Kotak Mahindra Bank
The blue-chip NSE Nifty 50 index closed down 0.1% at 15,818.25, while the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex ended 0.04% lower at 52,861.18 after touching an all-time high earlier in the day.
The Nifty Auto index which had risen 0.66% in the morning, ended 1.74% lower.
The blue-chip NSE Nifty 50 index closed 0.27% higher at 15,722.20 while the S&P BSE Sensex ended 0.32% higher at 52,484.67. They snapped a four-day losing streak.
