More than 9,900 people were wounded when the quake struck the southwestern part of the Caribbean nation on Saturday, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) to the west of the capital Port-au-Prince, according to the updated toll
"The president authorized an immediate US response, and named USAID Administrator Samantha Power... to coordinate this effort," a senior White House official said, according to a pool report.
It struck at a depth of 11 kilometres, with the epicentre near the town of Khesht, at around 7 PM (1430 GMT). Several weaker aftershocks followed, according to Iran's seismological centre.
