 WASHINGTON: US First Lady Michelle Obama is launching a grassroots campaign stressing every vote counts in her husband's quest to stay in the White House, the Democratic re-election team announced Thursday.

The president's wife is expected in the battleground state of Virginia on Friday to officially kick off the "It takes One" initiative ahead of the November 6 poll that pits Obama against Republican rival Mitt Romney.

"Every single person can make a difference in this election -- and today we're asking supporters to start by taking one action that will help grow our campaign," Michelle Obama said in a statement issued by Obama for America.

"If we all commit to finding at least one way to make an impact, we can ensure that we'll keep moving this country forward for another four years."

Ways in which supporters can help Obama's grassroots effort is by helping new voters get registered, recruiting volunteers or bringing friends to phone banks, she said.

In a separate email to supporters titled "Do just one thing," she noted it was true that this year's election will be "a lot closer than the last one."

"This could all come down to just a few votes per precinct in key states," she wrote.

Much like she was four years ago, Michelle Obama is an active member of her husband's re-election effort and takes part in many fundraising events on his behalf.

With Romney raking in more campaign donations over the past two months, Obama's team is counting on a tight network to mobilize supporters.

This model proved very effective in 2008 when Obama won the Democratic primary and the presidential election, in particular thanks to a large increase in participation by young voters and minorities, groups more likely to stay away from the polls.
