Italy reports 373 coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, 10,404 new cases

  • Italy has registered 119,912 deaths linked to COVID-19 since its outbreak emerged in February last year, the second-highest toll in Europe after Britain and the seventh-highest in the world. The country has reported 3.98 million cases to date.
  • Patients in hospital with COVID-19 - not including those in intensive care - stood at 20,312 on Tuesday, down from 20,635 a day earlier.

Novartis pushes back UK cholesterol study's end to 2026 on COVID disruption

  • In January 2020, Novartis struck a deal with the National Health Service to use its data to find patients at risk of heart disease for whom conventional treatment had failed. They are due to get Leqvio, which targets "bad cholesterol" that can cause heart attacks and strokes.
  • "With the impact of COVID in the UK, recruitment has been challenging," said John Tsai, Novartis's head of drug development, adding that recruitment is now "starting to get back on track".

US consumer confidence vaults to 14-month high in April

  • The Conference Board said on Tuesday its consumer confidence index raced to a reading of 121.7 this month. That was the highest level since February 2020, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and followed a reading of 109.0 in March. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the index increasing to a reading of 113.0 in April.
