ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned hearing of the case regarding elections of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Chairman in the province of Sindh.
The three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali heard the case filed by Muttahida Quomi Movement (MQM).
During the course of proceedings, Dr. Babar Awan counsel for Pakistan People Party (PPP) appeared before the bench and stated election with show of hands was necessary for fair elections.
He said that in a by-election in Karachi a candidate who was contesting election on a ticket of a political party withdraws his candidature one day before the election.
Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali remarked that political remained in power continuously but they did not do anything for election reforms. He observed that the country needs election reforms for holding of free and fair elections.
He remarked that population census was necessary for holding of transparent elections as last population census was held in 1998.
Dr. Babar Awan said that local government election for selection of Mayor and Deputy Mayor should be held with show of hands as secret balloting raises questions over its transparency.
Dr. Ramesh representing minorities pleaded the court to issue directives for holding of election through secret balloting instead of election with show of hands.
Farooq H. Naek counsel for Sindh government told the court that voting for election of Prime Minister and Chief Ministers held through division instead of secret balloting.
Later, the court directed the MQM counsel to complete arguments on next hearing and adjourned hearing of the case till April 14.
