ISLAMABAD: Leader of the House in Senate Raja Zafarul Haq Thursday said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government during its last tenure made the country's defence impregnable by conducting nuclear tests on May 28, 1998 in Chaghi, Balochistan.
Talking to PTV in connection with the Youm-e-Takbeer, he said India carried out two nuclear tests first on May 18, 1974 and the other on May 11, 1998, after which it started using aggressive tone against Pakistan, but following the Chaghi tests the arch rival could not dare to cast an evil-eye.
Raja, who was the member of the then federal cabinet which had approved to conduct the nuclear tests, said some quarters had doubt about the Pakistan's nuclear capability that was removed in the Chaghi demonstration.
The Youm-e-Takbeer, he said, was the day when Pakistan became first nuclear Islamic state and won a respectable place among the comity of nations, making its defence impregnable.
Although, he said, Pakistan faced economic sanctions by some countries as a result of the atomic explosions but Saudi Arabia remained steadfast and stood by it.
He said Saudi Arabia had extended all possible cooperation and provided $3 billion petrol so that Pakistan could maintain its foreign exchange reserves.
Replying to a question, Raja said the country's nuclear assets were in safe hands and "there is no doubt about it."
