imageISLAMABAD: Minister for Water and Power, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, highlighting positive role of religious seminaries on Tuesday said, madaris were playing conspicuous role in spreading religious education and literacy in the country.

On a point of order in National Assembly, he said, there are around 22,000 to 28,000 madaris working in Pakistan and as per credible evidence only involvement of 300 or 400 madaris is allegedly found directly or indirectly in terrorist activities.

He said an adjournment motion moved in Senate against Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Senator Pervaiz Rashid has already been settled in the Upper House and again a motion now has been moved in National Assembly which "I think is not fair and will aggravate the situation."

He said Pervaiz Rashid has already clarified his position as his statement was misinterpreted. He (Pervaiz Rashid) did not utter those words for Madaris and has not said anything negative in connection with the religious seminaries.

Khawaja Asif said his colleague Pervaiz Rashid had talked about those elements who spread terrorism in Pakistan.

The Minister said it is astonishing that in a foreign country one can say prayers without guards but in Pakistan guards are deployed in mosques and other religious places for prayers.

He said Islam is a religion of peace, love and harmony but where "We did mistakes due to which nation has been suffering and recalled the time when curriculum was imported in Pakistan."

"I think the motion moved in Senate against Pervaiz Rashid has already been settled and we do not need to amplify this issue. I would appreciate this issue may also be settled in National Assembly," he said and added the mover should accept my explanation and avoid further amplification.
