KARACHI: Roger Federer described his record Olympic semi-final win was as emotional as winning a Grand Slam.
Federer is chasing his first singles gold medal at Wimbledon, where he has won seven of his seventeen Slams.
“It’s the first medal for Switzerland during this Olympics. It was a big thing that carried me through. It was somewhat equal to a Grand Slam final for sure. The emotions I felt were as strong as winning a Slam. But you have to save some hopefully for Sunday so you can’t go overly crazy,” Federer said.
Federer, who defeated Andy Murray at SW19 to claim his seventh title, booked his place in the showpiece with a remarkable victory over Juan Martin Del Potro. He is yet to break another and is going to defend his title by facing Murray again in finals.
Murray also sees Olympics on par with slams, “I saw Djokovic in tears after winning bronze. That doesn’t happen if it is the semi-final of a Grand Slam. The Olympics are up there with the Slams.”
Britain's Murray set up an Olympic revenge mission against Federer as the world number four booked his place in the final with a 7-5, 7-5 semi-final victory over Novak Djokovic on Friday.
Murray produced a masterful display to beat world number two Djokovic in two hours on Centre Court and the Scot is now guaranteed at least a silver medal as he heads into his first Olympic final on Sunday.
