Ports and Shippings former Director General Captain Anwar Shah has suggested setting up of a National Tariff Regulatory Authority (NTRA) for controlling mal-practices of terminal operators. Shah, who is now advisor to the President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) for Shipping and Multi-model Transport, was speaking at a joint meeting with Pakistan Ships Agents Association (PSAA) and All Pakistan Shipping Association (APSA) held at KCCI.
He criticised terminal operators for wrongly charging exorbitant amount from consignees and traders causing detrimental effect on trade. There was no uniformity in their tariffs as compared to Asian region, he said. Nasir Mehmood, Chairman, Shipping and Multi-model Transport sub-committee of KCCI, presented proposals on security deposit issue, terminal handling charges, insurance, uniform charges and information of regional based ports tariffs from PSAA and APSA. He also highlighted the importance of establishing single regulatory authority consisting of shipping lines/agent, freight forwarders and terminal operators for monitoring the issues.-PR
