During the current monsoon season, water equal to more than two dams went waste due to non-availability of sufficient storage system, Superintendent Engineer Floods, Federal Flood Commission Ahmed Kamal said on Monday.
"Today, 203,400 cusecs water flow was recorded at Kotri downstream while about 100,000 cusecs water has been discharged during the last 15-days daily, which went in Arabian Sea without any utilisation," Ahmed Kamal told PTV.
He said if the water was preserved, it could prove beneficial for cultivation and electricity generation to meet the growing need of the country.
He stressed the need for constructing new water reservoirs without any further delay. He appreciated the present government for its commitment to build big dams to enhance water storage capacity, keeping in view the future needs of the country.
About flood situation, Ahmed Kamal said, "Presently, we are going to normal position." Only river Indus was at a medium flood position at two points ie Guddu and Sukkur for the last two weeks, but now it is receding, he added.
Flood is measured at seven different points of river Indus. There is low flood at five places out of seven, he said adding so there is no need to worry about floods.
"The Mangla and Rasool Dams are at regular position at river Jhelum while Chenab, Sutlej and Ravi are also at normal flow."
The river Kabul is at medium flood due to snow melting at upstream areas, he said.
About precautionary measures in case of high flood, the superintendent engineer floods said all arrangements have been finalised to meet any flood-like situation. Rehearsals have been done to get low-lying areas evacuated in emergency, he said.
To a question about the future planning to combat floods, he said a comprehensive plan would be prepared in collaboration with the provinces. The plan would carry short, medium and long term schemes to adopt flood protection measures, he added.
