As many as 128,140 candidates have filed nomination papers for second phase of union council-level Local Government Election 2005 being held in 56 districts on August 25. According to Election Commission figures, these candidates filed their nomination papers for six categories Nazim and Naib Nazim, Muslim (General), Muslim (Women), Peasants and Workers, Peasants and Workers (Women) and Minority Communities.
Out of total 3054 union council of second phase polls, 1810 are in Punjab, 521 in Sindh, 431 in the NWFP and 292 are in Balochistan.
For Punjab a total of 78,392 candidates have filed their nomination papers to contest election in 1810 union councils with 7064 candidates contesting for slot of Union Nazim and Naib Union Nazim. 35,009 for Muslim (General) category, 9,335 for Muslim (Women), 16,531 for Peasants and Workers, 7,420 for Peasants and Workers (Women) and 3,030 for the category of Minority Communities.
In Sindh, 22,553 candidates filed their nomination papers to contest election in 521 union councils with 2,132 candidates filing papers for the slot of Union Nazim and Naib Union Nazim, 9,628 against the seats for Muslim (General), 2,821 for Muslim (Women), 4,657 for Peasants and Workers, 2,136 for Peasants and Workers (Women) and 1,179 candidates have filed nomination papers to contest election against the seats specified for Minority Communities.
In NWFP, 16,507 candidates have filed nomination papers to contest elections in 431 union councils with 1,687 candidates filing nomination papers for the slots of Union Nazim and Naib Union Nazim, 7,719 for Muslim (General) category, 1,701 for Muslim (Women), 4,050 for Peasants and Workers, 1,276 for Peasants and Workers (Women) and 72 candidates filed nomination papers to contest election in Minority Communities category.
In Balochistan, 10,668 candidates filed nomination papers to contest election in 292 union councils with 1,085 filing nomination papers for the slots of Union Nazim and Naib Union Nazim, 4,196 for Muslim (General), 1,496 for Muslim (Women), 2,291 for Peasants and Workers, 1336 for Peasants and Workers (Women) and 282 candidates filed nomination papers to contest election against the seats for Minority Communities.
Processing of nomination papers will take its course during next few days with scrutiny process completing on Sunday (July 31).
