The River Indus at Guddu Barrage is in high flood with rising tendency, while the River Chenab is in low-to-medium flood at Trimmu with rising tendency. Water discharge in the Indus at Guddu at 6.00 am was 545,000 cusecs, which is likely to rise to 560,000 cusecs.
However, it would start falling after touching this mark during next 24 hours. According to Flood Warning Centre, water discharge in the River Chenab at Trimmu in the morning was 111,000 cusecs, which may rise up to 130,000 to 250,000 cusecs during next 24 hours.
Medium flood mark at this point is 200,000 cusecs and high flood mark 300,000 cusecs.
The River Indus at Sukkur is in medium flood with discharge of 366,000 cusecs at 6.00 am Water discharge at this point is likely to go up to 410,000 cusecs during next 24 hours while high flood mark at Sukkur is 500,000 cusecs.
The River Chenab at Qadirabad is in low flood with falling tendency and water discharge at this point would fall from 130,000 cusecs and it would be between 90,000 and 120,000 cusecs during next 24 hours.
Other main rivers, including Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej, are flowing below flood level.
Meanwhile, flood situation at Ghulam Muhammad Barrage, known as Kotri Barrage, remained normal, as there is so far no threat to protective embankment both at the left and right sides of the Indus.
This was stated during a briefing to Federal Minister for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jatoi on Sunday.
Proper vigilance along with extensive patrolling is being carried out at the embankments, said chief engineer Irrigation Kotri Barrage Manzoor Shaikh, while briefing the minister during his visit to Kotri Barrage at Jamshoro.
The minister was informed that there are 31 vulnerable points. Sixteen points at 107 miles long front, embankment on the left side of the river and 15 points at 124 miles long front embankment on the right side of the Indus. These vulnerable points were established during super-high and medium floods at Kotri Barrage Command Area in the last 20 years and strengthened in proper direction, however, strict vigilance of these points is still being carried out.
The minister was informed that after a survey, jointly conducted by the engineers of Pakistan Army and Sindh Irrigation Department, six of these points have been found sensitive, including H.P Bund of Mulla Katiar Thatta-Sujawal Bridge and M.S. Bund, 43 mile on the left side, Sunn-Veehdari Bund, Sondha-Hilaya Bund and Baghar Ocheto Bund on the right side of the Indus River.
Besides stone pitching, the steps of strict vigilance along with extensive patrolling and dumping of Abkalani material at these sensitive points have already been carried out by the Irrigation Department.
The minister was informed that the flood situation at Kotri Barrage has remained normal as currently 103,237 cusecs of water has been recorded at the upstream of the barrage while 65,695 cusecs of water is being discharged at the downstream.
Replying to a query by the minister, the chief engineer said de-silting at the upstream of the barrage is necessary to improve its life.
Manzoor Shaikh said he himself visited all components of the Barrage after the final inspection and found all of them intact. "There is no major threat for the current peak flood to cross through," he said, adding, "the current peak is not expected to go beyond 0.2 million cusecs."
Moreover, 0.4 million cusecs water in Indus River is likely to reach the limits of Larkana district from July 11 to13.
The Irrigation Department officials told PPI here that Indus passes 48 kilometres through Larkana district, where ten dangerous points of protective bunds have been pointed out.
The most dangerous point Aqil Aaghani Loop bund is only four kilometres from Larkana City.
ARMY RELIEF CAMPS:
Pakistan Army troops have established as many as 37 relief camps in Chiniot, in Jhang district and Trimmu Headworks areas to provide relief to the flood affected people.
Troops, equipped with motor boats and life jackets to carry out the relief activities, also have a sufficient stock of medicine and food items, said a ISPR press release here on Sunday.
These flood relief centres are providing medical treatment and food items to the flood-hit people. Special patrols of the troops are patrolling in the area to provide early warning of flood.
Presently, the major flood wave is passing through with no imminent threat to the low-lying areas adjacent to the Chenab River.
Major General Syed Shakeel Hussain, General Officer Commanding, on Sunday visited the flood-affected areas where he was given detailed briefing on arrangements made for rescue and relief operations.-APP/PPI
Our Islamabad correspondent adds: Flood situation in Punjab and NWFP provinces was under control on Sunday as the three main Rivers Indus, Chenab and Jhelum were flowing normally, but Kabul river was in high flood near Nowshera.
Official sources told Business Recorder that the flood peak was currently passing through Sindh province, but situation was fast improving in Punjab and NWFP and water in the rivers was receding. Army troops and provincial governments are, however, keeping vigilance on embankments and protective bunds of Chenab and Indus.
