Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly on Friday directed the Ministry of Education to surrender an amount of Rs 407 million, which remained unutilised during the year 2000-2001 and asked it to improve its financial discipline.
The PAC, which met here under the chairmanship of MNA Malik Allah Yar Khan, examined the accounts of Ministry of Education and its organisations namely Urdu Arts College Karachi, Pakistan National Commission for Unesco, National Institute of Science and Technology (Niste) and Urdu Science Board Lahore for the year 2000-2001.
The Public Accounts Committee, finding some irregularities, directed the concerned authorities for recovery in some cases and punitive action in others with regard to Urdu Arts College, Karachi.
Expressing disappointment at non-formation of policy and failure to lay down the principles of co-operation between the Government of Pakistan and the Unesco by the Pakistan National Commission for Unesco, the PAC gave strict instructions to the concerned authorities to submit a detailed report within two months in this respect.
IRREGULAR APPOINTMENTS: Further, it examined the issue of irregular and unauthorised appointments and promotion of staff, as pointed out by the Auditor General of Pakistan.
The Committee also examined the accounts of National Institute of Science and Technological Education and Urdu Science Board Lahore. It directed certain punitive action and recovery of amounts in some cases.
The meeting was attended by Mohammad Safdar Shakir, Ghulam Sawar Khan, Riaz Fatyana, Kanwar Khalid Yunus, Major Tanvir Hussain Syed (Retd), Lieutenant Colonel Ghulam Rasool Sahi (Retd), Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, Wasi Zafar and Chaudhry Qamar-uz-Zaman Kaira apart from the Auditor General of Pakistan, Accountant General and other officers of the concerned departments.
