 PARIS: French stocks plunged on Monday, showing a fall of nearly 5.0 percent in early afternoon trading, with sentiment highly nervous before Wall Street opened and because of a drop in French bank shares.

The CAC 40 index was showing a fall of 4.93 percent to 2,828.08 points, having been down 5.0 percent at one point. Shares in BNP Paribas bank were down nearly 14.0 percent and in Societe Generale by more than 9.0 percent.
