The captivating spiritual theme of calligraphic paintings creates an artistic ambiance in spiritualistic shades. Sublimity, supremacy, majesty and glory are the characters of this art. The art of calligraphy evolved with time, but its basic principle of harmony, composition and script along with geometrical designs remain the same. Calligraphy is an institution in itself and has its own proportions.
Calligraphy evolves with skill and years of practice. The process of transmitting knowledge by hand is often tedious, requiring a long process of acquiring techniques, intuition and experience.
Hence Calligraphy, when rendered by the hands of a master captures perfection, beauty and mastery.
The contemporary artists of our country through their art created a heritage of calligraphy for our future generations. With a strong aesthetic appeal, brilliant use of colours and superb balance between design and form, their art of calligraphy creates an immediate visual impact.
Several calligraphers flourished after independence and calligraphy gained a very high standing in the country. In the sub-continent history there were many known calligraphers who worked with heart and soul in this art and helped in spreading it in the region.
Now calligraphy has taken a new turn and it has acquired the form of painterly calligraphy. This new way of calligraphy has lately been practiced by the calligraphers of our time.
The calligraphers and painters of the modern era give more attention towards painterly calligraphy rather traditional one. They got influenced by calligraphic work done in other countries of the world and start drawing and painting the words freely and creatively without strictly following the traditional styles but of course this type of calligraphic work is governed by the principles of balance and proportion, rhythm and unity.
Painterly calligraphy became famous in 50s; Hanif Ramay was the true pioneer of this technique. He was followed by Shakir Ali, Sadequain, Aftab Ahmed, Aslam Kamal, Bashir Moojid, Shafique Farooqi, Ismail Guljee, Mashkoor Raza, Jamil Naqsh, Askari Mian Irani and others.
In the modern world Khat-e-Kufi, Khat-e-Tuluth, Khat-e-Nastaliq, Khat-e-Naskh, Khat-e-Diwani, Khat-e-Diwani Jali, Khat-e-Riqa and Khat-e-Reham are used by the calligraphers. But Khat-e-Suls, Khat-e-Naskh and Khat-e-Nastaliq are more famous among calligraphers.
During centuries-long heyday calligraphy became increasingly decorative and ornate.
Although different artists use different techniques and styles this art has a strong aesthetic appeal. The works appear in various shapes, highlighted by Islamic motifs in bright colours such as red, orange, green, blue, ochre, cloudy white that are eye catching with the glitter of silver and gold leaf that enrich the artworks resulting in an artistic tradition of extraordinary beauty.
