A very fruitful meeting between the Chairman & CEO of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Hiroyuki Ishige and the Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce, Textiles, Industries, Production & Investment, Abdul Razak Dawood was held at a local hotel onSaturday. JETRO is the trade, investment and technical cooperation promotion arm of the government of Japan. Hiroyuki Ishige is on a one day visit to Pakistan. As the Chairman of JETRO, this is his first visit.
During the meeting, JETRO Chairman talked about the activities of JETRO. He mentioned that in the survey of active Japanese companies that JETRO carries out every year, the interest of business expansion was always rated very high from Pakistan and he always wished to visit Pakistan to get firsthand information about business environment here.
During his visit, he met the Japanese companies working in Pakistan to inquire about the business environment and conditions. JETRO recognizes that Pakistan continues to play an important role as it draws renewed attention from the world as a node point to Central Asia as well as the Middle East.
Among the 74 overseas offices of JETRO, JETRO Karachi office is the third oldest and has been actively contributing towards the economic growth of Pakistan and Japan since the last 65 years. It includes research and dissemination of its results, promotion of investment, dispatch of missions, and organizing trade fairs. The information publicized by JETRO has a significant impact on Japanese investors.
While media in general tends to focus on Pakistan regarding security related issues, JETRO has been promoting positive information on business through seminars and online news. He asked the Advisor to share positive news about Pakistan with JETRO Karachi for further dissemination.
JETRO held a Pakistan investment seminar in Tokyo last December along with the Pak-Japan Government & Business Joint Dialogue. As it was said by the Adviser in the seminar, Pakistan welcomes investment from any country and has high hopes in particular for investment from Japan. As an outcome of the Joint Dialogue, JETRO Karachi is working for the collaboration in the information technology sector, between Japan and Pakistan.
He added that Japan realizes the economic situation of Pakistan and that the reasons behind the chronic trade deficit are the rupee depreciation and the depleting foreign exchange reserves.
However, JETRO feels that with the increasing working age population of Pakistani society and the increasing consumption orientation, innovation will play a significant role in Pakistan. -PR
