LAHORE: The Cane Commissioner Punjab has directed certain sugar mill owners to desist from blacklisting sugarcane growers because of protesting against deductions.
Cane Commissioner Punjab Muhammad Zaman Wattoo in a letter No. C.C. Admin (2)-08/2020/105 addressed to Ashraf Sugar Mills, Bahawalpur, said that a delegation of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad has called on the Cane Commissioner and intimated that the said mill was not accepting sugarcane from a large number of farmers.
The letter had also attached a list of 31 farmers who protested against illegal deductions from the notified minimum support price of sugarcane during the crushing season 2017-18. "Such arbitrary blacklisting of farmers that too due to their just demand of payment of the notified price is not justifiable. This act of the sugar mill runs counter to the claim of Sugar Mills Association that sugarcane is not being supplied by the farmers," the letter added.
