The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) condemning the discrimination has demanded of the government to provide equal opportunities in jobs and equal participation in business, politics, education, health and other fields for women. These demands were raised through resolutions at MQM Women Convention, held at Nishtar Park Karachi on Saturday.
The convention condemned the religious extremism and terrorism, and demanded of the government to take necessary steps against the menaces.
It declared the feudalism a main barrier to the development of the country and demanded a change in the system. It also urged the need for taking necessary steps against the incidents of honour killing and custom of marrying a woman with the Holy Quran.
The convention demanded of the government to provide small loans on easy terms to skilled women so that the ratio of unemployment and poverty could be reduced. It also demanded to establish small industries for women, setting up schools and colleges and for raise in pension of the widows.
The convention demanded that the government should immediately announce the schedule for local bodies' elections and the disparity in the prices of flour, sugar, milk and other commodities in Punjab and Sindh should be removed.
The MQM convention while expressing its concern over the 'artificial shortage' of water and prolong power breakdowns in the city, demanded that the government should install new power plants to overcome the shortage and called for quick completion of supply link between the Hubco and KESC.
