The economic managers of President General Pervez Musharraf and business tycoons have successfully steered Pakistan out of financial crisis with comfortable growth rate of 5.8 percent.
This was stated by Mian Muhammad Latif (Tamgha-e-Imitaz) chairman Board of Management Punjab Medical College, Allied Hospital, District Headquarters Hospital and District Public Safety Commission Faisalabad, while addressing a function arranged in his honour by Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI).
He said that Pakistan's economy was in shamble just few years ago. "Pakistan was an undeclared economic bankrupt state", he said and added that International Monitory Fund (IMF) and World Bank (WB) were avoiding this announcement only for their own interests.
He said that international community was not accepting Letter of Credits (LCs) issued by Pakistani banks and we had to get it endorsed by foreign banks after paying additional charges.
However, now our growth rate is comfortable at 5.8 percent while businessmen were also involved to improve the overall efficiency of the various public departments under good governance programme.
Sharing his experience to cultivate corporate culture in various government sector entities, he said that initially businessmen were treated like aliens when they tried to improve the over all efficiency of these institutions purely on volunteer basis.
However with logical and consistent persuasion, we succeeded in winning the blessings of the concerned government officials.
About PMC, Allied Hospital and DHQ Hospital, he said that he has succeeded in ensuring a qualitative as well quantitative improvement in its working, however doctor community fully played its role in this exercise.
"My first priority was to ensure best use of the available funds", he said and added that government also helped us.
Out of rupees one billion allocated for health sector reforms, Allied Hospital and DHQ hospitals also got Rs 140 million for improvement of emergency services.
The emergency ward is being doubled in Allied Hospital while a new emergency ward is under construction in DHQ, which will cater to the health needs of 150 million population of this region.
He said that funds made available for this programme are now being utilised for the purchase of medicine.
He claimed that patients are getting free medicine during first 24 hours while a Drug Bank has also been set up with the financial help of local business community to provide free medicine to the needy patients admitted in wards.
He was also appreciative of the businessmen running private hospitals for the ailing humanity.
He said that a local group of industries have inked an agreement with 2 expatriate Pakistanis to establish an ultra modern cardiology centre in its hospital.
"It will be able to conduct bypass and cardiac surgery in addition to angioplasty and other related facilities", he said and added that it will become fully operational by September this year.
About District Public Safety Commission (DPSC), he said that it has not yet delivered as Police Order 2002 was still incomplete and was being further processed to remove technical lacunas.
He said that President was taking keen interest in Police Order 2002 while a committee has also presented its report to Prime Minister enabling this institution to become fully functional by October 14.
However a full time secretary has been appointed to give necessary relief to the public within available circumstances, said Mian Latif.
Earlier, Mian Aftab Ahmad, President Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry presented welcome address, while Mian Javed Iqbal, former President FCCI, Mian Mohammed Hanif, chairman Citizen Police Liaison Committee, Sheikh Mohammed Saleem Sana and many other also spoke on the occasion.
Mian Aftab Ahmad President FCCI presented memento of Chamber to Mian Mohammed Latif, while Mohammed Yousaf Moti senior Vice President FCCI presented FCCI Shield to Mian Mohammed Hanif, chairman CPLC.
