Four benches - three full and one division strength - have been appointed by the Chief Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui to deal with the appeals in cases that dominate the taxation and service matters in the cause list for next judicial week.
The two cases of the independent power producers - Rupali Power Company and Spencer Powergen - seeking refund of their performance bonds notified in the advance list last week have been de-listed.
The Fixture Branch of the Supreme Court will notify new dates later.
There are about 25 appeals from the various sugar mills against the assessment of sales and other taxes by various tax collectors or appeals against the confirmation of those by the Appellate Tribunals of Customs and Sales Tax.
A large number of former employees of the Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) have come into appeals against the decisions of the Federal Service Tribunal in the service matters while employees of the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited are seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against their employers.
They based their cases on the judgement of the Supreme Court a few months ago in which directions were issued that the trainees employees of the company retrenched by Nawaz Sharif's government should be re-instated.
Similarly, a good number of appeals have been filed by the former employees of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) seeking re-instatement's while the national carrier has filed counter-appeals in the same cases.
THE COMPOSITION OF THE FOUR BENCHES WILL BE:
FIRST BENCH: Chief Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui, Justice Javed Iqbal and Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar.
SECOND BENCH: Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary, Justice Rana Baghwandas and Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan.
THIRD BENCH: Justice Mian Muhammad Ajmal and Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokhar.
Justice Syed Deedar Hussain Shah, Justice Khalil-ur-Rahman Ramday and Justice Falak Sher.
