imageISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) Tuesday urged the Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology to recommend launching a comprehensive awareness campaign about the country's potential to produce solar energy.

The meeting held under the chair of Senator Osman Saifullah Khan was attend by Senator Azam Khan Swati, Senator Mian Muhammad Ateeq Shaikh, Senator Lt. Gen. (R) Abdul Qayyum, Minister for Science and Technology Rana Tanveer Hussain, Secretary Science and Technology Fazal Abbas Mekan and other senior official of the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) and ministry.

PEC official said that there was dire need to start awareness campaign at university, college and chambers level to put their institutes on solar energy.

Awareness campaign should be started from DISCOs as they were afraid from the revenue losses, the official said adding that some private companies are producing solar energy.

He said that PEC had started two panels of solar energy of 178 kilo watts in which one was installed in its building and other one at Planning Commission Pak Secretariat.

The official said that solar energy has been linked with IESCO with the help of net metering and IESCO was a first distribution company of solar energy.

He said that IESCO was purchasing solar energy from the National Assembly through net metering and that solar panel has produced 7,66,000 units.

While stressing the need of solar energy, Osman Saifullah said that the concept should be ended now that every project has started by the government.

He urged the citizens and small industrialist for installation of solar projects.

Azam Khan Swati said that as the country was facing energy crisis and it was high time for every body to move forward on solar energy.

On the occasion, Rana Tanveer said that transmission system will not be replaced due to lack of funding in future and sometimes electricity could not be provided in absence of proper system.

He informed the body that one Mega Watt solar system was working at Pakistan Ordnance Factory (POF).

The meeting unanimously recommended the name of Senator Mian Muhammad Ateeq as member of Pakistan Halal Authority Board of Governors.
