imageISLAMABAD: United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has stated in categorical terms that the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) should be subject to international laws, including humanitarian law.

He made these remarks after inaugurating International Center for Peace and Stability at National University of Science and Technology in Islamabad on Tuesday. He said every effort should be made to avoid civilian causalities in the use of armed drones. He said drones should only be used for collection of information.

The Secretary General lauded Pakistan's efforts for peace and stability in the world. He said Pakistan's engagement has been crucial in peace keeping missions. It is one of the largest contributor to the peace keeping missions and currently about eight thousand of its soldiers are performing duties in different conflict zones. He said we will never forget the sacrifices made by Pakistani soldiers while serving under the United Nations flag.

Speaking on the occasion, Advisor on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz said the launch of international center for peace and stability is in complete harmony with Pakistan's policy of promoting peace and stability in the world.

He said Pakistan wants friendly relations with all the countries for world peace and stability.

Sartaj Aziz said Pakistan remains committed to fighting terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. He said we will continue to fight terrorism till its complete elimination.

Army Chief Ashfaq Pervez Kayani pledged continued support for United Nations peace keeping missions.

He said Pakistan is a responsible nation and has always responded positively to the call of United Nation's requirements for its global peace keeping missions. He said establishment of peace and resolution of conflicts in any part of the world ultimately contributes to international peace and stability.

He said establishment of International Institute of Peace and Stability will help building capacity of Pakistan to further contribute to the global agenda of peace keeping. He said this institute will be developed into a center of excellence.

Director General Military Operations Major General Ashfaq Nadeem Ahmed said Pakistan is actively playing a leading role in establishing peace in the world.

He said one hundred and thirty six Pakistani soldiers were martyred while wearing blue helmets of the UN.
