  • The railways ministry will work and implement the SOPs set by the government in wake of coronavirus outbreak, says Rasheed.
  • The trains will resume operations as per the new time table: Railways minister.

(Karachi) Prime Minister Imran Khan has given approval to start train operation across the country from May 20 (Wednesday), Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said on Monday.

Addressing a press briefing in Rawalpindi, he said the PM allowed to commence 30 trains in the first phase. "If the situation improves, we will start more trains in the country by June 1."

He added the railways ministry will work and implement the SOPs set by the government. He pointed out that there is a rush of passengers and it was a much needed decision. He said the trains will resume operations as per the new time table.

The minister said emergency has been declared at Karachi, Multan, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Quetta stations to ensure that no irrelevant person, except passengers with valid booking can enter the premises. He said those, who have not yet got their booking confirmed can book their seats if available.

Rasheed said railways is a chain that connects the four provinces. He announced that ticket prices will also be reduced by 50-60 per cent, even though the move will land the ministry in a loss.
