The council of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is all set to choose its Deputy Mayor - one of the key positions in the local bodies setup as by-polls are scheduled for Thursday (today) at civic body's head office - old KMC building. A KMC spokesman in a statement said as many as 300 council members would exercise the right to vote. The polling will begin at 9am and continue till 5pm without break.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) have fielded their candidates - Syed Arshad Hassan and Karamullah Waqasi, respectively for the slot.
Syed Arshad Hassan has got an edge over his opponent as the city council is dominated by MQM legislators. The seat fell vacant on March 13, 2019 after the Election Commission of Pakistan pronounced Deputy Mayor Dr Arshad Abudullah Vohra disqualified for switching parties after being elected to his position. Vohra had become the deputy mayor on the ticket of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan. He had been elected chairman from the Union Council 49.
