Sweden has appreciated Pakistan's role in the war against global terrorism and also expressed satisfaction over the commencement of the dialogue process between Pakistan and India.
This was conveyed by officials of Sweden during Foreign Secretary Riaz H. Khokhar's meetings with the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Hans Dahlgren and other officials, in Stockholm.
Khokhar's meeting with Dahlgren covered subjects relating to review of bilateral relations, Pakistan-EU co-operation, regional issues and international developments.
The foreign secretary briefed Dahlgren on domestic situation in Pakistan and the improved economic performance.
TIES WITH INDIA: On regional matters, he briefed Dahlgren on Pakistan-India relations with reference to the composite dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues, including Jammu & Kashmir dispute, as well as on Pakistan's role in promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan.
There was an exchange of views on the situation in Iraq. Riaz Khokhar spoke about Pakistan's role in the fight against international terrorism and explained Pakistan's non-proliferation policy.
On Pakistan-EU relations, the foreign secretary underlined the need for enhanced co-operation following the ratification of the Pakistan-EU co-operation agreement. Foreign Secretary Khokhar called on Foreign Minister Ms. Laila Freivalds. He conveyed Foreign Minister Mian Khurshid Kasuri's greetings to Ms. Freivalds.
On behalf of Kasuri he extended an invitation to Foreign Minister Freivalds to visit Pakistan. She accepted the invitation.
BILATERAL TRADE: The foreign secretary met separately with State Secretary for Trade and Industry Sven-Eric Soder.
The discussions focused on matters relating to Pakistan-Sweden bilateral trade and on measures to increase the scope of bilateral economic relations. Both sides expressed satisfaction that trade and business interaction between the two countries was picking up and underlined the importance of enhancing economic co-operation between the two countries.
They noted the impressive economic turnaround achieved by Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Khokhar welcomed the planned visit of a Swedish trade delegation to Pakistan later this year.
They agreed that prospects for increasing, bilateral trade and investments have improved and efforts need to be made to encourage greater business contacts and overall economic collaboration.
