Emoji’s are one of the most popular ways of communicating in the virtual world, now a Muslim teenager is on a mission to increase representation of Muslim women and men in the virtual world.
Meet Rayouf Alhumedhi, a 15-year-old Saudi teenager living in Germany, has sent a proposal to the Unicode Consortium, the organization that reviews and develops new emojis, reported the Huffington Post.
Alhumedhi in the proposal has strongly urges the company to launch a series of headscarf emojis, including a woman wearing a hijab and a man wearing a keffiyah.
"My friends, who don't wear the headscarf, they found something." Alhumedhi said. "For me? I had to opt to not use an image of a woman wearing a headscarf. Because there isn't one."
"I wanted something to represent me, alongside the millions of women who wear the headscarf every day, and pride themselves on wearing the headscarf," she added, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.
Alhumedhi was of the view, that the hijab, is a prominent feature of observance for millions of Muslim women around the world, which is also a common attire in the Muslim world.
“In the age of digitalization, pictures prove to be a crucial element in communication,” Alhumedhi wrote in her proposal. “Emojis are more impactful and utilized than ever before. Millions use them to convey feelings, appearances and stories.”
