ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Monday deferred a motion regarding publishing the names of those judges of superior judiciary who have dual nationality.
The motion moved by Senator Farhatullah Babar was deferred after the Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, Pervaiz Rashid assured the House to gather information from Law Ministry and Registrar.
"The information is needed from Registrar Supreme Court. He will be contacted by writing a letter. Guidelines will also be sought from Ministry of Law and Justice," the minister said in the House.
After his words, Chairman Senate Nayyer Hussain Bokhari asked the mover, if the motion could be deferred for the time who agreed and the matter was deferred.
Earlier speaking on the motion, Farhatullah Babar said the superior judiciary has constitutional power to interpret the constitution. The court de-seated a prime minister while interpreting the constitution, he said.
He said the even government employee could not be promoted from grade 19 to grade 20 due to dual nationality. He demanded of the government to provide information to the House whether any judge of the superior judiciary has dual nationality or not.
Saeed Ghani said over 120 PCO judges were removed from their posts in the light of decision announced by the Apex Court. He said that the government should provide information about the dual nationality of the judges if someone has dual national.
Haji Adeel while taking part in the discussion said if there is constitutional bar on dual nationality of parliamentarians then why judges, generals and other high officials are exempted.
Hafiz Hamdullah of JUI-F said his party would fully support any move, barring dual nationality for judges, generals and other high ups.
