imagePESHAWAR: The positive impact of massive reduction in prices of petroleum products by the Federal Government on passengers have started visible in Khyber Pakthunkhwa where transport fare was reduced by five to six percent on the inter-districts routes.

The Provincial Transport Authority (PTA) has revised fares of transport plying on inter-district routes after cut in prices of petroleum products was announced by the Prime Minister, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif few days ago.

A PTA spokesman told APP that transport fare on inter-districts routes in KP has been reduced by five to six percent with strict direction to transporters to fix new fare lists on permanent places in transport stands/vehicles for facilitation of passengers.

Peshawar-Manshera fare has been slashed from Rs 265 to Rs 252, Peshawar-Mingora (Swat) from Rs 211 to Rs 201 and Peshawar-Abbottabad from Rs 235 to Rs 224. Likewise, the transport fare of Peshawar-DI Khan was reduced from Rs 410 to Rs 390, Peshawar-Bannu from Rs 238 to Rs 226 and Peshawar-Haripur from Rs 190 to Rs 181 respectively.

The Secretary, Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Niamatullah when contacted told APP that crackdown against transporters involved in overcharging have been launched and strict are being taken against violators.

The Secretary RTA said that he along with officials of Provincial Transport Authority (PTA) checked several vehicles on motorway yesterday and collected information regarding transport fares from the passengers.

He said owners of 48 vehicles were challaned for overcharging the commuters on Motorway and cancelled the permits of 33 vehicles. Similarly, additional fare was returned to the passengers.

Niamatullah Khan said a meeting with SSP Operations would be held shortly for hiring services of a Police Squad to bring culprits involved in overcharging to task. He said the Government would adopt zero tolerance against transporters involved in over charging as mostly poor and middle class people travel in passengers transport.

The RTA would ensure implementation of the new fare lists in the province in wake of significant reduction of petroleum prices by the Federal Government and surprise raids would be conducted to check fare prices on the spot, Naimatullah Khan maintained.

The transporters, he said, have been directed to fix fare lists on permanent places on transport stands/vehicles in their own interest, otherwise, RTA would take action against violators of its orders.
