imageISLAMABAD: Former chairman WAPDA Shams ul Mulk said that country was facing power shortfall and inauguration of new power generating projects was welcoming step by the current government.

Talking to Radio Pakistan, he said that previous governments committed criminal negligence by not paying heed towards power generating projects, consequently costlier power had become a serious issue at present.

He added that with the efforts of current government, power shortfall would be made up to some extents but people would continue to face the problem of costlier power.

He said that the lone way for cheaper power was hydle generated power, but previous decision makers never paid heed towards this option and WAPDA was not allowed to construct Kalabagh and Diamer Basha dams.

Former President, Karachi Stock Exchange Majeed Aziz said that overcoming energy shortage had been top priority of the government in last one year as government continuously remained in contact with energy experts from numerous countries. He said that energy conservation should be adopted as national habit and it was responsibility of every influential person to highlight this issue with a missionary spirit.

The Executive Director, SDPI Abid Qayyum Sulehri said that unfortunately cost of production was higher due to use of furnace oil which had made power unaffordable for the public. He said that shifting over to energy mix was a need of the hour to get cheaper power; however, switching over to energy mix was not possible in short span of time. He said that defaulters and power theft were also serious problems which led towards mounting of circular debt.
