zaradiISLAMABAD: Quran-Khawni and dua was held at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Tuesday for 'eisaal-e-sawab' of Maadr-e-Jamhoriat Begum Nusrat Bhutto at Aiwan-e-Sadr on the occasion of her first death anniversary.

President Asif Ali Zardari, federal ministers, parliamentarians and a large number of party workers, men and women, and the staff of Presidency participated in the Quran-Khawni.

They prayed for eternal peace of the Maadr-i-Jamhoriat who faced great tragedies and difficulties bravely in the course of her arduous struggle for democracy and fighting for the rights of the people of the country.

Earlier, the President in his message on the occasion urged the democratic forces to rededicate themselves to the principles for which late Begum Sahiba struggled all her life and suffered so much.

The President said that on the first death anniversary of Maadr-i-Jamhoriat, Begum Nusrat Bhutto, "we pay homage to the former first lady, who is revered not only as the wife of the country's first directly elected Prime Minister and the mother of the Muslim world's first directly elected Prime Minister but who also stood tall and braved tragedies and hardships in the course of a long and relentless struggle for democracy.

The contemporary history of the sub-continent does not offer many comparable examples of courageous woman who suffered so much for the cause of democracy and rights of the downtrodden as was suffered by Begum Nusrat Bhutto, he said.

The President said that Begum Nusrat Bhutto was a woman of great compassion, elegance, grace and courage.

Her example will continue to inspire generations of party workers and democrats in the continuing struggle for protecting and preserving democracy and democratic institutions, he said.

The Maadr-e-Jamhoriat may not have seen that her struggle bore fruit but she did not struggle in vain. She may no longer in this world but her struggle has culminated in the restoration of democracy, constitutionalism and rule of law in the country, he said.

The President said that on her first death anniversary there is also some consolation in the thought that the history has finally laid bare the truth that her daughter Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and the people had been wronged by forces inimical to democracy.

The best way to pay tribute to the memory of Maadr-e-Jamhoriat is to protect democracy and Parliament from new forms of onslaughts, protect the rights of women, minorities and vulnerable sections of society, the President said in his message.
