(Karachi) Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice-President Maryam Nawaz has said that Shehbaz Sharif has been arrested for not standing against former premier Nawaz Sharif. She added that Nawaz Sharif will soon return back to the country and will lead the party.

Addressing a press conference hours after arrest of PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif in money-laundering case on Monday, she said: "Shehbaz did not leave his brother's side and this is the sole reason for his arrest."

She said Shehbaz Sharif showed loyalty and commitment to his brother and his cause. "PML-N is being subjected to political victimization by NAB and PTI-led government," she said.

Maryam stated that Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz are being held "illegally" as the government has failed to prove corruption allegations against them. "NAB could not prove corruption of a single penny against Shehbaz Sharif but we accept the decision of the court. We are not afraid of arrest."

"The PML-N President's wife and children are made absconders, while Hamza is in jail and suffering from coronavirus," she pointed out.

"Shehbaz Sharif was not arrested for corruption or accountability but as a political revenge. A reference against him is ongoing and he was arrested in the middle," she said.

She mentioned their is a consensus in her party that Nawaz Sharif should return after completing his treatment. "Opposition parties are committed to implement the agenda agreed during the All Parties Conference."

The PML-N President highlighted that the government has been handed over to a person who does not have experience to run the affairs of the state.

She said that if there was any rule of law in the country then one of the PM’s aides involved in alleged embezzlement would get arrested instead of Shehbaz Sharif.

She said that apart from politicians, judges were also under pressure to give the "selected" favourable judgements. However, there were a few who were taking a stand for justice.
