Government of NWFP in collaboration with GTZ arranged a one-day workshop on Disaster Management in NWFP at a local hotel in Peshawar on Thursday. Special Secretary Finance Department, Abdus Samad Khan was the chief guest on the occasion while Commissioner Kohat Division Muhammad Umar Khan presided over the event.
Besides Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Jamil Amjad, the workshop was also attended by all the stakeholders and the concerned officials from across the province as well as the federal government.
Addressing the workshop, the Special Secretary Finance extended every possible support for arranging resources from the provincial government for the PDMA and DDMAs so that it could respond to any disaster in an effective manner thus to avoid human and material losses to a possible extent. He informed that the recommendations put forth by the participants would be considered at provincial level. He was also appreciative of the GTZ assistance in this regard.
During daylong session of the workshop, the participants evinced keen interest in the event and shared their experiences. The workshop was also followed by question/answer session. The concerned authorities of district Manshera and Chitral gave presentations about the formation of DDMAs in their respective districts as Model.
The presentation of DCO Chitral Motasim Billah was very impressive, as the authorities have evolved a very quick mechanism to respond to any catastrophe. This can be turned as a Model Plan for other districts to follow. Earlier, representative of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and provincial Chief of PDMA, Jamil Amjad gave a detailed presentation about NDMA, PDMA and DDMA.
It merits a mention here that national and provincial disaster management authorities have already been established while workshops are being arranged to establish authorities at districts level and incorporate the input of all stakeholders in the establishment of DDMAs as well as District Disaster Plans.
