The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) has condemned the contract system that has affected jobs of about three million fishermen and has demanded for restoring fisherfolk-friendly license system in fishing grounds of Sindh. The PFF members also threatened to observe hunger strike if their demands were not met. PFF member Sikandar Brohi has stated this while addressing a joint press conference here on Tuesday.
He said it was only a few years back that Sindh government introduced a contract or auction system for inland fishing grounds.
According to this system, Brohi said, instead of issuance of license to fishermen, the water was auctioned to influential contractors.
This new system allows contractors to carry out fishing activity through fishermen that he dubbed as exploitative one.
Labour Party Pakistan general-secretary Farooq Tariq and Asim Sajjad from Peoples Rights Movement were also present on the occasion.
