imageISLAMABAD: The government has set a target to produce 3,873 thousand tones of meat during the fiscal year 2015-16 to fulfill the domestic requirements of the meat as well as to export.

According to an official in the Ministry of National Food Security and Research about 3,696 thousand tons of meat was produced during the fiscal year 2014-15.

Meanwhile, 2,017 thousand tons of beef would be produced during the period under review as compared to the production of 1,951 thousand tons of same period last year for tackling the domestic requirements.

Besides, mutton production targets was fixed at 686 thousand tons as against the production of 671 thousand tons of last year where as poultry production targeted fixed at 1,170 thousand tons during next fiscal year. he added.

He said that government has set a target to produce 54,328 thousand tons of milk during upcoming fiscal year as against 52,623 thousand tons produced during fiscal year 2014-15.

The eggs production targets was also set at 16,188 million eggs during the period under review to fulfill the domestic consumption as about 15,346 million eggs were produced in 2014-15.

During the fiscal year 2015-16, the government has set fish production targets at 788 thousand tons as compared to production of 765 thousand tons during fiscal year 2014-15.

Where as 295 thousand tons inland and 493 thousand tons of marine fish, he added.

He said that geographic position of the country provides a scope of considerable opportunities to boost livestock production and to enhance the quality of livestock, poultry, fisheries and sea foods.

In order to expolite production and trade, the government would further developing veterinary infrastructure, improve gene pool, standardization of feed, develop skill of manpower and effective enforcement of legislation, he added.

He said that value chain systems are being encouraged to overcome huge post production losses which occur to farm products specifically perishable ones due to improper transportation, unhygienic handling and inadequate marketing infrastructure.
