pope-francis-hotel-billOne of the first matters Pope Francis settled yesterday on his first day as pontiff, was to visit the Church-run residence where he was staying previously, and insist on settling the accounts himself.

Going back to collect his luggage so that he could move it into his official dig, the 266th pope decided that since he’s now the Vatican role model, he should pay his expenses at the hotel Domus Internationalis Paulus VI from his own sacred pocket, even though he technically owns the place now!

Jorge Bergoglio, known for helping the underprivileged in Buenos Aires, is the first to take the name of St. Francis of Assisi, thus signaling a compassionate bond between the Catholic Church and the poor. He is also the first pope in 1300 years who does not hail from Europe.

Father Pawel Rytel-Andrianik, who resides in the boarding house where Bergoglio stayed, reportedly said Bergoglio used to frequent the place and behaved just like any other priest instead of showing off that he was a cardinal.

Allegedly, he even never asked for a car, but preferred to take the metro or go on foot just like everyone else, unlike any other pope.
