CAIRO: Egypt, the world's largest wheat importer, has procured 3.5 million tonnes of local grain during the harvest season so far, the cabinet said in a statement on Friday.

Harvesting, which began mid-April, is set to continue until July 15 but some silos and storage facilities in a number of provinces have been partially closed as the quantities being delivered drop towards the end of the season, the cabinet said.

The government said previously it aimed to procure 3.6 million tonnes of local wheat this season.
