Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football after Argentina's loss in Copa America final.
According to Mirror, “It's tough, it's not the time for analysis," Messi said. "In the dressing room I thought that this is the end for me with the national team, it's not for me. That's the way I feel right now, it's a huge sadness once again and I missed the penalty that was so important”.
"I tried so hard to be champion with Argentina. But it didn't happen. I couldn't do it. There are four finals, not for me, unfortunately, it was what I wanted. More than ever I wanted to win at least this cup but (it) could not be”.
"It's very hard, but the decision is taken. Now I will not try more and there will be no going back. I tried many times to get a title and failed."
Messi lost a final for the third year in a row and the fourth time overall with Argentina. However, Messi undoubtedly remains one of the most talented players of the game, although his international performance has long been overshadowed by his club play.
The greatest player of his generation, perhaps soccer's best ever, he was still without a title on Argentina's national team. "For me the national team is over. I've done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion," the 29-year-old Barcelona superstar told reporters after his fourth defeat in a major final with Argentina.
Messi, a five-time FIFA player of the year, winner of four Champions League titles and eight Spanish La Liga crowns with Barcelona, was crushed. Much of his nation had counted on him to bring home its first major title since 1993.
