KARACHI: Deputy Inspector General of Police, Karachi-East, Munir Shaikh has confirmed two deaths and 14 injuries during a remotely detonated explosion that ripped through a police bus on Friday morning.
Talking to media, during his visit to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) he said at least four to five kilograms of explosive material was used in the bomb which was detonated through remote control.
In reply to a question, he said there was proper security, with police squads both in front of and behind the bus yet the route is such that it is difficult to provide fool proof security.
Responding to another query, he said involvement of Tehreek Taliban in the incident had been reported to the police authorities through media.
"Yes they are among the top suspects yet we have to conduct our investigation prior to any sort of confirmation," said DIG Shaikh.
The vehicle carrying Sindh Special Service Unit's police commandos was on its way from Razzaqabad Police Training Centre to Bilawal House in Clifton, the residence of former president Asif Ali Zardari.
In-charge of the JPMC Accidents and Emergency Department, Dr Seemi Jamali also confirmed the number of casualties, mentioning that two of the injured brought to hospital were civilians.
She said that most of the victims had suffered ball-bearing and shrapnel injuries.
Apart from a few with head injuries most had lower body wounds, said Dr. Jamali.
