GILGIT: The people of Gilgit are still waiting for enforcement of announcement made by the former PM Yousaf Raza Gillani declaring Gilgit as a big city in 2011 and promise of providing standard facilities to the local people at par with other big cities.

People said 9 years on but no practical work has been done and still residents of Gilgit waiting for the resolution of ongoing problems of drinking water, electricity, poor sewerage system, narrow bumpy roads and poor streets condition etc.

The electricity crisis of Gilgit has also affected the lives of ordinary citizens.

Residents of Gilgit are facing more than 14 hours power outages on daily basis which has almost halted the routine life and business activities. According to power department total needs of electricity for the resident of Gilgit in winter is 60 megawatts but due to shortage of water only 30MW is generated that is not enough for the city.

People also demand from the provincial government resolution of issues with regard to poor sewerage system in the city that is creating many problems in routine life of the people.

Rehman, a resident of Gilgit said that “poor drainage, road and street system increasing our problems day by day and due to non-availability of modern sewerage system polluted water enters in houses and damages walls”.

“Immediate attention from the government is necessary for the solution of this core issue and it is the prime demand of the resident of the Gilgit “he added.

Ali Ammar a resident of Gilgit said for the improvement of road condition in Gilgit and Skardu cites provincial government had made a three phases plan but no work has been done so far on the project”.

Citizen of Gilgit demanded of the government to resolve the issues of scarcity of wide roads, dilapidated street, electricity system and sewerage system by enforcement declaration of big city status announcement for the Gilgit.
