Zardari requests court to grant him exemption from fake accounts case hearing until Eid

The former president Asif Ali Zardari requested an accountability court on Wednesday to exempt him from attending the money laundering through fake accounts case hearing.

The Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) co-chairperson’s lawyer Farook H Naek filed an application on behalf of his client. In his petition, the PPP leader requested the court to exempt him from attending the hearing as he has to appear before the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The petition requested the court to set another date for the hearing, local media reported. The petition further asked the court to set the hearing after Eid-ul-Fitr.

On Tuesday, the former president moved the Supreme Court and requested it to declare the transfer of the case null and void. The petition also pleaded the court to transfer the fake accounts case back to Karachi.

In March, a banking court in Karachi had ordered that the money laundering case be transferred to NAB's Islamabad headquarters. The bureau had recommended that the case be shifted to the capital city.

NAB has been investigating Asif, his sister Faryal Talpur and others in the money laundering of Rs 35 billion.
