The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday summoned the Director General (DG) National Accountability Bureau Sindh to appear on February 15, 2019 over delay in completion of inquiry in alleged misappropriation in sales tax in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
A division bench of the SHC headed by Chief Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh censured the NAB in delay of completion of inquiry and remarked that court can't tolerate making the issues a "laughing stock" and directed the DG NAB to appear in person over this issue. The court was hearing petitions of three accused in corruption scams, who moved the court against delay in completion of inquiries.
The DG NAB should explain about the delay in completion of inquiries in person, he said and remarked that the results of the inquiries conducted by the NAB for two years end up in nothing.
The investigation officer of the NAB submitted before the court that six references have been filed over the misappropriation in sales tax, which caused huge losses to national exchequer and told that even one accused applied for plea-bargain in this regard.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice SHC directed NAB to submit the report at the earliest after completion of investigation in a corruption scam in the constituency of Speaker Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrnai. The NAB prosecutor told the court that the development funds in Garhi Yaseen were allegedly embezzled, which falls in the constituency of Agha Siraj Durrani. Investigations are under way against 17 government officials and 32 contractors.
Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh also showed his displeasure over the working of NAB and stated that its officials didn't visit the scene of the crime and do the work by sitting in their offices. Chief justice also raised questions on the capability of investigation officers of NAB. Addressing the NAB's investigation officer CJ SHC asked him do you know the work or got this work done by someone else.
He said that business of corrupt elements is going on as well as the business of NAB is also running and said that the issues are messed up most in NAB Sukhur.
Court sought the details of pending inquiries in NAB Sukhur and directed that NAB should submit a report by March 05, 2019 about the corruption cases in various departments of the province.
In alleged embezzlement in procurement of wheat in Sindh involving former minister Nisar Khoro, The SHC approved the bail of an accused Zahid Hussain against Rs.0.5 million surety bond. The SHC bench headed by CJ SHC ordered the accused to surrender himself in NAB within fifteen days, who moved the court against NAB inquiry in wheat procurement scam.
