Faisal Raza Abidi sent to jail on judicial remand in contempt case

A District and Sessions court sent on Saturday Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) former senator Faisal Raza Abidi to prison on judicial remand in a case pertaining to anti-judiciary remarks made by him.

During today's hearing, police presented Abidi before the court after his two-day physical remand by an anti-terrorism court ended, after which Judge Nasir Sohail sent Abidi to jail on judicial remand, local media reported.

On October 11, the Islamabad High Court rejected the former PPP senator's plea to drop the cases against him. A case was filed against Abidi for his statements which he made during an interview. He had used defamatory language against the Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar and also insulted the judiciary.

On October 10, the PPP's former senator was arrested outside the Supreme Court and taken to Secretariat police station. The police registered a case against him on the complaint of assistant sub-inspector of Secretariat police station Shaukat Abbasi under section under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act and charges of defamation.
