At least 13 persons including seven children and three women were killed in a landslide that hit shanties located in slum settlement near Ghulistan-e-Jauhar area in the wee hours of Tuesday. According to details, the incident took place at around 2:00am when a mass of rocks and soil fell on a slum from a nearby hill, burying three camps of labourers. Following the incident, rescuers and heavy contingent of law enforcement agencies including Rangers and police, besides area residents rushed to the site and dug out 13 bodies including seven children and three women from the rubble after hours long rescue operations.
Three families comprising 13 people were living in the shanties hit by the rockslide, area residents said. The ill-fated families were from Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan of Punjab, they added. All the bodies were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for post-mortem examinations. Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui visited the site and inquired about the rescue operation. Speaking to the media persons, Shoaib Siddiqui said that the administration was making efforts to rescue the survivors, if any. He said that all the deceased belonged to two families who had camped at the site three days ago.
