Commerce Minister, Khurram Dastgir and Pakistan's High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit on Tuesday discussed ways and means to resolve trade issues with India prior to grant of Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status renamed as Non Discriminatory Market Access (NDMA).
According to an official statement, Pakistan High Commissioner to India apprised the Minister on the details of recent visit of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to India, his vision is to promote regional peace and harmony and in that context to promote regional trade and investment. Minister of Commerce informed the High Commissioner about his last visit to India in January 2014 and on the process of normalising trade relations. He emphasised the need for active trade diplomacy in order to tap the vast potential of Indian market for Pakistani products.
He assured all out cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce in exploring the Indian market and emphasised the importance of maximising business to business contacts by sending and receiving trade delegations. Dastgir further stated that as per the vision of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, economic interests should reign supreme while setting out diplomatic policies and strategies and in that regard, every effort should be made to bring improvement in our trade and investment relations with India.
High Commissioner appreciated the warm support by the Ministry of Commerce in enhancing economic relations with India and to promote regional peace and security by increasing the people to people contact. Insiders claim that the Commerce Minister expressed his wish to hold fresh round of talks with India to resolve unsettled trade related issues especially raised by the agriculture, pharmaceutical and auto sectors.
