Politicians on Tuesday gave cautious reaction to the arrest of Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain by the London's Metropolitan Police in a money-laundering case, saying the move can affect the country's politics. Talking to media persons outside the Parliament House, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah expressed solidarity with the MQM, saying the party and its workers are in a difficult time.
"We don't want to create further difficulties for the MQM and its workers," he said, adding that the government should come to help the MQM in this difficult time. He said the development could affect the country's politics, adding that Altaf Hussain is a leader of a political party and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should take up the matter with the British leadership.
Jamait Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, while commenting on the arrest of MQM chief Altaf Hussain, termed it "unfortunate", saying the move should not affect situation in Karachi. Talking to reporters outside the Parliament House, the JUI-F chief said that the MQM chief Altaf Hussain could better defend the allegations levelled against him and the party's leadership and its supporters need not to create unrest in Karachi.
"This is an unfortunate development...the MQM leaders and its supporters need to remain calm and not create unrest in Karachi," he said, adding that Altaf Hussain is a British citizen and he is well-aware of the British laws. "Altaf Hussain is also a sensible leader and would not want unrest in Karachi," he said, adding the MQM leadership need to take a wise decision by keeping in view the situation of Karachi while giving any reaction to the arrest of its leader in London.
