US, UK back 'rule of law' in Pakistan after ex-PM arrested

  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says just want to make sure that whatever happens in Pakistan is consistent with the rule of law, with the constitution

WASHINGTON: The top diplomats of the United States and Britain together called Tuesday for adherence to the "rule of law" in Pakistan after former prime minister Imran Khan's arrest triggered nationwide violence.

"We just want to make sure that whatever happens in Pakistan is consistent with the rule of law, with the constitution," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a joint news conference in Washington.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, speaking alongside Blinken, noted that Britain enjoyed "a longstanding and close relationship" with Commonwealth member Pakistan.

"We want to see peaceful democracy in that country. We want to see the rule of law adhered to," Cleverly said.

Both declined to comment in further detail, with Cleverly saying he had not been fully briefed on the situation.

Imran, who was ousted last year as the civilian prime minister of the world's fifth most populous nation, was arrested during a court appearance Tuesday in Islamabad on one of the myriad cases against him.

Supporters of Imran, who has been seeking a political comeback, took out vengeance against the military, which has long had a dominant position in Pakistani politics.

Imran in the past has alleged US involvement in removing him, claims that Washington strongly denies.

"As we have said before, the United States does not have a position on one political candidate or party versus another," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said when asked about the situation in Pakistan.

I really don't care what happens within Pakistan. But it has been a ride watching this country for the last 25 years. Pakistan's obsession with Kashmir gave the army the excuse to make itself more powerful. And when the army became powerful with the promise of delivering Kashmir, they took away democracy, took away the economy, and took away Pakistan's dignity. Today the country is lost, has no roadmap for progress, and civil war is imminent. Ayaz Amir, the great reporter, wrote in Dawn in 1998, and those words are more true now than ever: "Pakistan has sacrificed its identity on the alter of Kashmir. These were not mine; this was a Pakistani visionary who saw today. May Pakistan forge ahead with its quest for Kashmir with renewed zeal and continue with maximum vigor, its principled stand on Kashmir for another 75 years.

@TimeToMovveOn, you are hilariously transparent! None of the coups in Pakistan's history have been done in the name of Kashmir, Kashmir has played a very minor role in domestic politics of Pakistan because the parties are all aligned. The state of the army today is as a result of the massive cash injections, and enablement of business and land/housing scheme developments which created vested interests during and after the Musharraf era and the American war of terror. During Zia's time there was very little army business or DHAs that could temp officers into corruption and protecting their interests. This all happened thanks to America and Musharraf

It's always amusing and exposes the intelect of US and EU when they have nothing to say on NAB law amendments and tweaks in other criminal and civil law procedures that benefit the under-trail suspects in the sitting government. Same is true for confirmed money laundering cases and importantly, crime against the economy of Pakistan, but these democratic champions conveniently look the other way.
