LAHORE: Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said on Saturday that it is a matter of pride that this year Pakistan is hosting World Environment Day due to an effective and solid policy of the federal government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Elahi was speaking at a function arranged to mark the World Environment Day. Claiming credit of developmental work done in his era as chief minister Punjab, the Speaker said during his five years GDP growth was 8 percent and Pakistan’s growth rate was 7.3 percent which has never happened in the history. He said our people’s welfare projects were made victims of delay by Shehbaz Sharif, delaying tactics were used in many such works like Rescue 1122, Punjab Assembly’s new building, Wazirabad Cardiology, Special Education, patrolling posts which were for welfare of common poor man; IT department was established for the first time in Punjab.

He said during his regime ratio of using development budget was 97 percent for the first time and the World Bank not only praised our programmes but also provided funds for their continuation. The Shehbaz government had utilized 45 percent of development budget and present government has also done the same due to which launching of new projects are facing difficulties.

He said there is a need for starting work for improving the environment at district and tehsil levels because 67.5 percent of the population lives in rural areas, providing clean air to the society is the responsibility of the government.

Environment Minister Punjab Muhammad Rizwan said in his address that unfortunately Pakistan is one of the 10 countries being affected by the growing effects of global warming and today there is a need for everyone to play its role in preventing global warming. He regretted that during the last several decades no long-term planning had been done to curb environmental pollution.
