ISLAMABAD: The National Curriculum Council has proposed that the government may prepare model textbooks, which would be a benchmark for all the provinces and units, in implementing uniform curriculum across the country.

Federal Minister for Education and Vocational Training Shafqat Mahmood presided over the third National Curriculum Council meeting.

The three-hour meeting was attended by provincial ministers of education and relevant secretaries, representatives of the Federal Government Educational Institutions, the Army Public Schools, the Pakistan Air Force, Navy schools, the private sector, Ittehad Tanzeem Al Madaris Pakistan, minority representatives, and prominent educationists, and offered their own suggestions and comments.

Mahmood said workshops were held in all the four provinces on the uniform national curriculum and a four-day workshop was also organised at the national level. The draft was prepared by consensus, which was formally sent to all members of the National Curriculum Council.

All the participants in the meeting agreed that the practical step of formulating the national curriculum, points in the right direction of the government, and is an important need of the hour.

Mahmood said that a uniform national curriculum was very close to their hearts.

This will be a great help in ending the class education system.

The federal minister for education said there was no ambiguity on the issue of language in the uniform national curriculum.

Teachers will teach in a language that makes it easier for the child to understand better. However, there will be uniformity in the syllabus. English will be taught as a language

Different views were expressed regarding the preparation of textbooks.

Majority of the participants expressed that the government should prepare a model textbook, which would be a benchmark for all the provinces and units.

The federal minister said the provinces could also introduce additional materials but care should be taken not to impose additional burden on the children.

The Federal Minister for Education said the main objective of a uniform education system was to eliminate injustices in the pursuit of education and to close the class gap in the field of science and education.

Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai should be considered as a hero not only of Sindh but also of the rest of the provinces and their people and this is possible only when the curriculum content and materials are the same.
