While a meeting of Punjab University Senior Management Committee including Deans of Faculties, Chairperson Doctoral Program Co-ordination Committee, Chairman Admissions Committee, Director Planning and Development, Chairman Semester System, Chairman Hall Council and Director IT, held to review and approve the plan and dates for transition of university administration to the Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions system. Dean Faculty of Sciences Professor Dr Jamail Anwar presided over the meeting.
The implementation team from Techlogix Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd presented the CMS Project progress to the attendees and was granted approval for the plan of User Acceptance Testing Phase. As per this approval, CMS will be verified by university administration in May 2009, prior to its actual usage, which is planned to start from June 2009.
The CMS project to implement Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions is based on the Higher Education Commission initiative. The project has met all timelines as per plan with the efforts of Punjab University, IT Centre CMS team and with special attention of worthy Vice-Chancellor & Senior Management.
CMS will enable the university to have a single point of reference for students and teaching staff information. Admissions applications data from all departments on any of the three campuses will be entered in CMS; after system based evaluations, the qualifying applicants will be offered admission.
Applicants who finalise their admission by paying fees will be upgraded to students. Student will be issued their login ID for CMS in the first semester/ year. Similarly, each faculty member will have their own account in CMS. To name a few benefits, CMS will facilitate the registration process for on campus students, their grading process, award of transcripts and checking of degree requirements by rules that have been configured in the system.
Currently there are more than 500 different program offerings that vary in their timings, locations, specialisation and rules. The 63 departments maintain their own data manually or by using semi-automated or automated systems. CMS is expected to optimise the data-centric processes and eliminate stores of redundant data.
For example, CMS will maintain the grade record of students to help the administration apply the degree requirement rules as defined by the university; hence eliminating the paper-based communication between academic departments and Examinations Department.
The university administration is currently engaged in attending the video-based Campus Solutions Orientation Program which will be followed by a comprehensive training and User Acceptance Testing phase in next month to help the departments and colleges across 3 campuses to start transition to the usage of a centralised system.
