Philips began as a lighting company in 1891 as a light bulb manufacturer. Our understanding of physics helped us pioneer many of the twentieth century's key breakthroughs in lighting technology. This in turn forged a successful transition to electronics through vacuum-technology-related industries like radio, television and X-ray tubes.
Lighting is a unique way of transforming our surroundings. By adjusting light we can personalise a space to match the occasion, our activities or the mood we're in. Light touches our lives like nothing else. Lighting is a way to create an ambience, to express who we are and what we value. It also has the ability to energise and stimulate people. Just like sunlight, it can make us feel vital and optimistic.
Philips Lighting improves people's lives with lighting solutions (consisting of products, systems and services) by applying leading technologies in light generation, optical distribution and controls. This is achieved through a thorough understanding of what people need, want and aspire to.
We are proud of our history in lighting, but prouder still of our future. Today we are leading in most of our businesses on most continents. Philips is a people-centric company focused on Healthcare, Lighting and Consumer Lifestyle, dedicated to improving the quality of people's lives with meaningful innovations.
Philips is number one in the global lighting market; with a strategic ambition to set the pace in the lighting industry as the first-choice innovative partner for the supply of creative and cost-effective lighting solutions.
SAVE NOW FOR A BETTER, BRIGHTER FUTURE...Lighting accounts for about 19% of electricity used world-wide. Lighting represents 30% of a building's energy consumption; hence it is clear that remarkable savings in operational cost can be achieved with a good lighting design. A quality lighting system can help you to make savings on electricity and maintenance costs.
Our new innovative lighting solutions can realistically save up to 40% energy on all of today's installed lighting, whether outdoors, in offices or shops, or at home. At the same time, these solutions can offer a clear improvement in the quality of the lighting.
But the switch-over rate to energy-efficient lighting is still too low given the energy-saving opportunity. We are working hard to remove the obstacles to accelerating this switch-over via awareness campaigns. Philips is actively trying to raise awareness of the untapped environmental and financial potential of new energy-efficient lighting systems now on the market.
We are also working to improve product lifetime and reliability in order to reduce waste and limit maintenance disruption. Furthermore, we are also setting the pace in mercury reduction and in developing lead-free and radioactive-free products.
We adopt a sustainable approach in our production processes. All our manufacturing sites have achieved ISO 14001 certification and run environmental management systems. We make great efforts - in a variety of ways - to reduce energy consumption in each of our plants.
GROWTH THROUGH SUSTAINABILITY: Sustainability for Philips Lighting is about growth. By empowering future generations to meet their needs, we open up a world of opportunities for our company.
As market leader we are recognised by our stakeholders as setting the pace in the industry. We are recognised as the best partner to do business with, the best company to work for and to invest in, and as a responsible citizen contributing to sustainability of the society at large. We are excited by the changes happening in the lighting industry, giving us ample opportunities to shape our own future by showing leadership.
As the world's leading lighting company we are proud of the role we can play in encouraging the switch to innovative energy-efficient lighting, and helping combat climate change.
MEANINGFUL INNOVATIONS COMPACT FLUORESCENT LAMPS (CFL): CFLs have come a long way since they were first introduced by Philips in the early 80s. CFLs are one of the simplest ways to reduce our demand for energy. Apart from saving energy, CFLs last upto 6 times longer than standard lamps. Their reduced power consumption can dramatically help reduce CO2 emissions.
The method of light-generation in CFL is different from that of standard lamps. Incandescent light bulbs produce light from the little metal filament quivering inside the sealed glass bulb. Electricity passes through the metal thread, heating it, and the filament glows with the heat and emits light. On the other hand, compact fluorescents produce light in a different way.
In a fluorescent bulb, the glass tube is filled with gas and a minute amount of mercury. Electricity excites the mercury molecules, which have a special property: When so excited, they emit ultraviolet light. This invisible UV light strikes the bulb's phosphor coating, which itself gets excited and emits visible light, shining out through the tube. CFLs produce far less heat than standard lamps.
In an incandescent, only 5% to 10% of the electricity passing through the wire becomes visible light; the rest becomes heat and invisible UV light. The vibrating mercury vapor atoms in a fluorescent bulb produce light more efficiently than a tungsten filament. More light is produced for every watt of electricity consumed.
An incandescent makes 12 lumens per watt; whereas a CFL produces over 60 lumens per watt. A 100-watt classic bulb is identically bright as an 18-watt energy-saver, meaning the CFL uses 80 fewer watts, saving 80% on electricity costs. Philips compact fluorescents are rated to run for 6,000 hrs. At an average, a lamp is lit for over six hours a day; and at that rate, a CFL lasts around 3 years.
SOLID STATE LIGHTING (SSL): In today's increasingly individualistic world there is a growing demand for personalised lighting solutions. And when it comes to giving your fellow citizens lighting installations that will perfectly match their needs, moods and aspirations, no one offers you more choices than Philips LED luminaires. When you choose Philips SSL luminaires for your applications, you bring your city to life.
Solid-state lighting is the future of our industry. It offers the multiple benefits of energy efficiency and long life, robustness, small size, colour changing and a high degree of controllability. Today Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are found mainly in mobile devices, household appliances, electronic equipment, car lights and traffic signals.
LEDs in the future will be used increasingly in general illumination systems, especially in shops and for city beautification, and allow people to do things with light that were never before possible. There are two major trends in the application of SSL: the creation of new ways to use the light, such as embedded in furniture or the pavement, and the increasing importance of software in controlling these new uses in an easy way.
LEDs last up to 100 times longer, and are up to three times more efficient than today's standard incandescent lamps. Since LEDs last longer than a normal light source, there is no need for frequent replacements thereby reducing or even eliminating on-going maintenance and re-lamping expenses.
LEDs are more efficient than incandescent and most halogen light sources, using up to 90% less energy. LEDs are typically much smaller than conventional light sources, allowing for dramatically different lighting designs capitalising on the unobtrusiveness of the source.
Designing with LEDs can enable completely hidden sources of light, eliminating large visual luminaires, and creating a magical effect when illuminated. The solid-state nature of LEDs makes them extremely rugged and durable; an excellent choice for city lighting where reliability and dependability are paramount. LEDs do not contain any mercury. Since they last longer, there is less waste disposal in the environment.
Other features include sophisticated electronic controls that will enable users to adjust the output of light source. The impressive end result is a lighting installation which offers an almost infinite choice of different shapes, intensities, colours and effects. There really is no easier or more affordable way to add a dramatic new dimension to your landmark architecture at night than Philips SSL luminaires!
Philips SSL luminaires are designed for use with the widest possible range of classical and modern buildings, bridges, structures, monuments and sculptures. Their demonstrably superior colour rendering, brightness, durability and cost effectiveness ensure they are an equally impeccable choice for buildings, waterfronts, fountains, museums, city halls, cultural centers and signage.
In addition to cutting your monthly fuel bills, these highly robust luminaires will eliminate re-lamping, significantly reducing your maintenance schedules and costs.
Offering unrivalled durability and more brightness than other currently available alternatives, Philips SSL luminaires are the ideal solution for your landscape lighting needs. The full range of applications on offer includes everything from shapes, curves, structures and building outlines. Philips LED Luminaires for contour lighting are ideally suited for the most distinctively designed structure.
ELECTRONIC GEAR: With increasing concern of energy consumption and the effect it has on our environment, Philips has dedicated both its design and manufacturing expertise to address this issue. Philips electronic ballasts (choke) deliver economic and operational advantages by improving lighting quality and optimising lamp life performance while reducing energy consumption. In short, Philips electronic ballasts save precious energy today while promising a brighter future tomorrow.
Philips electronic ballasts have a power factor greater than 0.95. This means that the energy needed for operation is almost equal to the energy consumed; which implies minimum wastage. This is good for energy authorities as it means less strain on power distribution, good for the consumer as the energy bills are lower and good for the environment as less energy needs to be created. Considerable amount of energy savings can be achieved by converting conventional gear to electronic HF gear in existing lighting system.
COSMOPOLIS: Philips CosmoPolis street lighting systems is one of our energy-efficient products. More than twice as efficient to run as older mercury vapour lamps, CosmoPolis systems also contain industry-leading low levels of mercury. The product lifetime and reliability of CosmoPolis is excellent, reducing waste and limiting maintenance disruption.
Philips CosmoPolis lighting system saves 50% of energy costs and creates a safer environment, thus giving a low cost of ownership. The CosmoPolis offers best optical efficiency for greater spacing and thus lower investment.
DEDICATED TO SUSTAINABILITY: If all energy-inefficient lighting in the world was upgraded to the latest technology solutions - in the domestic, public and private sectors - the annual running cost savings would be - USD 165 billion - equivalent to CO2 emission savings of 55 million tonnes per year - equating to 1.5 billion barrels of oil per year.
We are setting the trend in transformation from conventional light sources to solid state lighting. Some notable projects featuring Philips energy-efficient lighting are Habib Bank Plaza, Mai Kolachi Road, Mohatta Palace, National Hockey Stadium, Gaddafi Stadium, POF Golf Course, etc.
Philips Lighting seeks to improve people's lives with lighting. We are able to do this by thoroughly understanding and fulfilling your needs, desires and aspirations. We then deliver solutions, consisting of products, systems and services that are designed around you and therefore make perfect sense. In today's fast-changing world, we're faced with a constant flow of new products and technology.
Yet so frequently these products frustrate and annoy us. Technology should be there to help us, to make our lives easier and more productive - not more complicated. At Philips, we believe that no matter how complex and advanced the underlying technology of our products and solutions, people should feel comfortable using them. It's this simplicity that transforms a task into an opportunity, a burden into a pleasure. That's why we're committed to delivering advanced products that are easy to experience.
